The Chicago-based early-stage agricultural technology company is on a mission to reduce food waste. Shippers,growers, and retailers are always looking for new ways to ship food further,enter new markets, extend the growing season, and have less food rejected at the retail level. Hazel Technologies’ products address these needs by adding significant and measurable value throughout our customer’s food supply chains.

Our extensive intellectual property has formed the basis for the fast-paced growth Hazel Technologies has experienced this year. Consequently, Hazel Technologies is searching for an experienced and self-motivated attorney to provide support as an in-house general counsel and contribute regulatory and intellectual property expertise to our growing team.  

Position Description: 

The Director of Legal Affairs will report directly to the Chief Operating Officer. This position will have three main areas of responsibilities: corporate counsel matters, regulatory compliance, and intellectual property protection. This position will be primarily responsible for a wide variety of commercial agreements, including master supply chain related agreements, NDAs, supplier and vendor-facing service agreements, licensing agreements, marketing agreements, purchasing agreements and other contracts to supporting the company’s business activities. This position will also coordinate legal activities with external firms, maintain our intellectual property portfolio and develop forward-looking intellectual property strategy,and support our regulatory group in national and international compliance. Qualified candidates must have exceptional judgment, strong critical thinking skills and a track record of thriving in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.  


  • Draft, review, negotiate and close a wide variety of commercial contracts with the company’s clients, suppliers, strategic partners, and vendors.
  • Work closely across all business functions within Hazel to successfully close transactions in a manner consistent with Hazel’s policies and best interests.
  • Engage and lead any needed work from our outside counsel teams that are required to successfully meet our commercial goals
  • Provide guidance on business and legal risk mitigation strategies, and corporate governance matters.
  • Direct the preparation of and filing of new intellectual property and supervise further office actions for the current IP portfolio.
  • Advise the regulatory group on strategy and execution of product compliance with national and international regulations.
  • Coordinate the activities of external law firms across all company legal matters.


  • 3+ years of relevant in-house and law firm experience.
  • Significant experience in drafting and negotiating strategic alliance, partnership, licensing, intellectual property, and commerce-related agreements.
  • Understanding of intellectual property, licensing, confidentiality, data security, and commercial law.
  • Ability to understand complex contractual issues, assess risk, and provide concise business-focused legal advice.
  • Ability to understand and research state and federal regulatory requirements.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, and ability to manage multiple urgent projects concurrently.
  • Experience working with multiple business functions and clients (Finance, Sales, Engineering, Product Management, People& Culture).
  • Excellent judgment and ability to craft creative solutions.
  • Highly self-motivated to lead projects with minimal supervision.
  • Strong communication and negotiation skills.
  • Proven ability to succeed in a fast-paced, emerging tech company environment
  • BA/BS degree and JD required (member of Illinois State Bar, in good standing)


  • Experience in/knowledge of agriculture and/or agricultural technology
  • Spanish language skills, a plus
